How to package your insurance
More people live in California than any other state in the Union. California is known for earthquakes. Between those two statements lies your hopes and fears. The fact that so many people live in California means the risks can be spread among so many more people. The premiums are way lower than they would be in states with half the population. But the risks are higher, not just because of the notorious earthquakes, but also because of the lifestyle.
To walk or bike is to run a higher risk of traffic accident than mugging or homicide. Without sidewalks and crosswalks, hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists a year are injured. Now change the ordinary bicycle into a BMX and add in all the other exciting sports such as inline skating, skate boarding, surfing, sailing, etc. Your lifestyle choice can make you more expensive to insure.
In one sense, this could be an argument for always picking a state or regional insurer because this insurer will have local knowledge and expertise. But if you pick a national company, this is spreading the risk among all the states where the ground stays more steady and the lives are more conservative. Overall, this can make the premiums cheaper.
